They say that once you get to a certain age, all policemen start to look younger. The relevance of that to a music review? Blame the press release as it makes much of the age of Kitten’s singer Chloe Chaidez’s age. Let’s just say that, by my calculations, she won’t even have a driver’s licence.

And so, dear friends, to the music. The first thing that strikes these tired ears is how surprisingly retro this band sounds considering how young the members are. Not necessarily a bad thing as fashion dictates looking backwards in time even if you have to wonder whether this was a true artistic choice or whether Ms Chaidez was just exposed to a surfeit of FM radio stations playing radio friendly rock whilst in the womb. It is therefore no surprise that there are electro-rock influences aplenty in “Kill the Light” and “Chinatown” though that splash of Kate Nash style cuteness in “Allison Day” did come as something of a surprise. Fortunately, there is a star turn hiding right at the end as the raucous and somewhat morally dubious “Kitten With A Whip” struts its sweaty stuff. Just the kind of song that will make you wonder what they are putting in cat food these days.
