I seem to recall that there was a film called “The Land That Time Forgot” and, in music, it does sometimes seem that time is often also forgotten. Witness this EP from Seattle band Strong Like Woman for, despite being a recent release, it sounds in every way like it was recorded way back in the early days of basement synth pop.
Nevertheless, the band have the potential to amuse as they have invented a stylistic car crash with the Talking Heads, the cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Depeche Mode sustaining injuries that will definitely require hospitalisation. Although the lyrics often fall into the pit of awkwardness, that slightly camp delivery (best experienced in the deliciously dubious “Long Live The Sons of God”) does evoke fond memories of big hair, dank basements and drinking cider long before it became fashionable to do so.
Whilst not beating a new path, Strong Like Woman are clearly a fun band. If only it were 1987 again…
