An Italian rock 'roll band is likely to mean business and when the members of said band use monikers like Nick Nitro, Speedking and T-Bone then you know that they are living the life. So it was with "Psychorama" by the Fiftyniners.

This album starts as it means to continue with "Lonely Sick Star" being infused with both that primitive rock 'n' roll energy and a notable affinity for B-movie kitsch. If they had CD players in '57 Cadillacs then this album would be the perfect soundtrack. The band's affection for the full on reverb driven music of days gone by is clear but there has also been an infusion of post punk energy that takes them out on to the dance floor and beyond.

Whether twisting up the blues – as in "Alone" – or taking an unexpected foray into post rock – as in "Don't Be Scared", the Fiftyniners impress with the energy and precision with which they play. "Psychorama", as an album, is so much more than a mere pastiche with the Fiftyniners showing a genuine affection for both the sound and feel  of old time rock 'n' roll whilst  adding a dash of modern day imagination and post punk energy to the equation. More invigorating than a double espresso.
