Do I hear the sound of a battle of the sexes about to begin? Making noise with grungy guitars and the odd keyboard has gotten to be the territory of women lately with bands like The Shrapnelles grunging up the girl power in a way that the Spice Girls never could. That said, the male of the species isn't likely to go down without a fight and consequently Lil Daggers step up into the ring for a sonic rumble in the basement.
There've got but four tracks to do it in but they throw in some psych pop moves and a bit of underhand Sir Douglas Quintet tactics to strike their first blow with "King Corpse". Following through with more leisurely lo-fi in "Ya Tu Sabe" reinforces their raison d'être even if it aims more for points than a knockout decision. "Hungry" puts some bounce back into this band's boots availing itself of its punk roots before it's all over with "Devil You Know" ("I like my drinking fast and my dancing slow…") leading the band out of the ring like a good natured Dictators song would (or might if it were still 1975).
In the end, the result was easy to predict as no one would actually hit a girl but Lil Daggers put up a good fight here.
Also available on vinyl, by the way.
