An alt.punk band from Ayrshire? That would be Roscoe Vacant and the Gantin' Screichs. A good name for a band without a doubt but as for the genre…

I say that because, oddly enough, the Ayrshire take on alt.punk sounds a lot like indie rock. Well, at least for the first few songs anyway as Roscoe Vacant and the Gantin' Screichs come across like the angry little brothers of a band like the Dead Sea Souls. However, things do soon take shape with much more in the way of adventure and individuality to be found in "Indian Summer".  That song is not an isolated incident either with the nihilistic message of "Nothing's Going to Change", driven ever forwards by strident guitar of Ross Gilchrist, packing quite a punch. Obviously on a roll, the band then play the high value cards with the positively poppy "Shortbread Tins & Tartan Hats" bitch slapping your ears to attention. Truly, there is the mark of quality in that song.

"Reckurdt" is the band's debut album so you have to make allowances for that and there are clearly song writing skills in the mix.  However, Roscoe Vacant and the Gantin' Screichs spent a bit too much time in the dead zone of indie rock this time around to pass for a real alt.punk band like Rise Against. In the final analysis though, good songs are good songs and that makes me think that album number two might well make quite an impression.
