A funk band from Glasgow? I know there was the Average White Band but we are talking about today and we are talking about a band whose members are actually younger than your granddad. Federation of the Disco Pimp are seven strong too which helps as you cannot be a funk army on your lonesome.
Federation of the Disco Pimp, despite the sleazy moniker, deploy themselves like a well-honed military unit with everybody knowing exactly what they must do and, armed with the kind of reverential respect for late seventies jazz funk that I had thought long since lost, exactly when they should do it. Such precision only comes with practice, of course, and that, my friends, is yet another thing I had thought long since lost amongst bands from Glasgow.
However, the dance floor is the objective here and it is conquered with a variety of mostly self penned songs that soon get those white stilettos moving around the designer handbags. "Bruce Lee" stands out here for its near relentless groove but the star turn is undoubtedly the live workout of "Money Runner" and "Hang Up Your Hangups" that ably demonstrates this band's combat capabilities in the mirrorball arena.
A classy album undoubtedly. If only it were still 1979…
