Pause for a moment, my friends, and give thought to the musical enema that is the covers band. Forever cursed to recite the songs of others in the style of others they haunt the pubs and wine bars of many a green and pleasant land whilst being, almost inevitably, fronted by someone called Tony or Chantelle. There is nothing inherently wrong with covering another band's songs but there is that whole concept of ownership to consider.
I'm not talking the publishing rights either more the way that a singer can take control of a song and make their version the one that becomes the basis for comparison. Well Hung Heart take a stripped out and slowed down approach to reinterpreting "Power of Love" by eighties FM radio legends Huey Lewis and The News here. It's the same song that you – might probably? – know but turned into something less bombastic and more - dare I say it? – sensitive.
Vocalist Greta Valenti has been guilty of redirecting songs before, like Radiohead's "Creep", and puts not a foot wrong here taking the song beyond a mere acoustic rendition into a confident and sensitive ode to the complexities of matters of the heart.
Like I said, it's a matter of ownership and Ms Valenti now owns this song.
