Things that appear through the letterbox part 452. An EP from someone you have never heard of is hardly unusual nor is the lack of any attached biographical information. It is the way, methinks, of the tormented, inevitably male, singer songwriter.
Duly, Joe Anthony's EP "Breathing Backwards" made it on to the trusty CD player for a spin and wallow in someone else's pain for, sure enough, Joe Anthony – who is from Wiltshire it would seem - has decorated all his songs with a healthy dose of mid-paced melancholy. However, he does show more than a bit of lyrical strength, especially on "To Follow My Feet", and that, in itself, could sustain a musical career. As a further bonus, he has gone further than a providing a mere acoustic strum along to accompany his words with the backing track swathed in entirely suitable reverb.
I'm not sure there is a market for this sort of thing anymore but one thing is for certain and that is that beneath all that melancholy beats a heart that is true.
