It’s getting to be a habit with her for it is that time of year when Sofia Talvik releases her Christmas single. This year, the song is called “Winter Canon”.
There is always more to Ms Talvik’s words than meets the ear. Sure enough, the song appears to echo the conventional elements of Christmas such as roasting chestnuts and singing angels but, and this will no doubt be immediately obvious to those of us who are used to her word weaving ways, “Winter Canon” is more elegiac than overtly festive. It seems obvious, and perhaps even predictable given her track record, but the song has been infused with a degree of shadowed unsentimentality that makes the sugar coated vocals more reticent and the words darker than they are presented to be.
Ms Talvik sings to those who think that no one listens and, as that time of year approaches, we should all remember the dangers of isolation.
