It must be the sunshine that causes the west coast of the USA to bring forth so many singer songwriters with Fang-I Liu – she’s of Taiwanese descent – adding her debut EP “Confessions” to the discography of the sensitive at heart.

Ms Liu shows a gift for commercial songwriting here with many of her songs – I think of “China Doll” in particular – sounding that they should be on a publisher’s roster for the likes of American Idol.  As a singer she has a subtle charm that seems at odds with the downright clumsy and bombastic production that nearly derails this EP but, nevertheless, I would be interested to hear what Ms Liu could come up with should she find herself in more sympathetic hands.

In the meantime, if you are going to listen to just one of her songs on this album then try “Circles”. I’m thinking of a comparison with Lynsey De Paul here and that is praise indeed in my book.

Available from CD Baby.
