Dropping straight of a time machine after journeying all the way from the seventies is Australian blues rock band Gypsy Bangles. They might not have been around that long but they sound like they belong to a time kept alive only by the memories of balding old men.

That said, Gypsy Bangles do keep it real here with a very convincing facsimile of the easy going tour bus and alcohol abuse lifestyle of a proper rock band. The songs are riff driven, as you would expect, and they are solid as, well, a rock. Like all real musicians, Gypsy Bangles can sound like they are freewheeling whilst actually being entirely focussed on what they are doing. There are no surprises to be found in the lyrical content with “Alcohol” being exactly what you expect and “Dark Haired Women” being the kind of anthem to female empowerment that every self-respecting blues rock band should have.

Singer Kegan DeBoheme carries off his role with aplomb and, such is his authenticity and affection for the genre, he soon makes a believer of the listener. In fact, after listening to this EP, I got this overwhelming urge to search EBay for some Allman Brothers albums. Job done, as they say.

The EP is available from Bandcamp.
