Glasgow pop funksters Mickey 9s go for the dance floor with their “A Thing to Try and Dance To” EP. It’s kind of scary in a way too. Rolling out of Grand Central station is the first song “Find A Thing” that soon provides the proof that, since the untimely demise of Wham, there are still white boys that can do the funk meets Lalo Schifrin thing. Holding on to its coat tails is “Sprechen Sie Deutsch” which grooves mercilessly whilst being completely unencumbered by meaningful lyrics.

I’m not sure if any reference to esteemed actor Christopher Walken is actually intended in “Christopher Walken” but it might well have been a tactical decision as Christopher Walken was, and always will be, eight hundred times cooler than George Michael. Especially if you have the soundtrack to “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels stuck in your car’s CD player…

Last to be lit by the mirrorball is “Black Boy Style”. More of a workout than an actual song, it does suffer compared to the other songs here when divorced from the sweat soaked dance floor.

All said, Mickey 9s do music to have a good time to so dance you sucker…
