It has to be the sunshine. There has to be an explanation for the continuing survival of power pop on the west coast of America with The Good Evol - from California, of course – providing yet more proof.
With enough warmth to justify the use of air conditioning, Natalia Bortolotti’s going to the mall voice carries these eight songs right along with her on a mission to bring a smile to your face. It’s not all candyfloss, as you might expect, but the bubblegum charm of songs like “Perfectly Flawed” or “My Future Ex-Boyfriend” is hard to resist. Sugar coating aside, there is substance beneath that shiny surface with, for example, the fate of those who live in reality television society being the subject of “Growing Up in Public”. Smart, well constructed songs are definitely the name of the game here.
It did seem like “Butterfly Crush” was the kind of album destined to be played on the kind of radio stations that no longer seem to exist but that does not distract from its charm and, like their near neighbours The Kimberly Trip, The Good Evol keep the good flag of catchy pop songs flying here.
