Two girls do post punk? That’s The Vignettes for you as this Memphis based duo keep it short. Very short with neither of these songs making the two minute mark. In fact, both songs punch you in the face and run away in 1 minute and 12 seconds precisely. I believe that is exactly the amount of time it takes to make a coffee in Starbucks thus giving proceedings something of a holy perspective.
Now, that isn’t long to make an impact but if you take all pretension out of the equation then it can be done. “Baby Angel Boy” is all drums and guitar howling at you from the back of the room topped off with the kind of tormented female vocals that make a comparison with the Slits pretty much obligatory. “Not Much To Say” is on the same menu and sets a steamroller course towards sonic devastation. Ok, it’s simple but it works.
These songs share vinyl space with a couple of songs by The Ketamines as part of Odd Box Records’ Singles Collection.
