OK, let’s try some indie rock (from Sheffield, just for a change). From an anthropological perspective, it clear – or it has become clear anyway – that indie rock is indie rock and there appear to be no regional variations floating about in the gene pool. Therefore, it is perhaps no surprise that The Hudares – pause for a chuckle at the name – sound exactly like every other indie rock band.
I suppose that’s no bad thing if you like indie rock but I doubt that it helps this band in their quest to stand out from the crowd. The prerequisite Oasis influences are present and correct but there is an unexpected element of humour in their join the dots song writing that is most evident on “Chasing Luck”. However, the only real standout here is vocalist Dave Howard who throws all he has got into his performance thus bringing the songs a gravitas that they don’t really deserve.
So, this EP and this band are not without redeeming qualities but they need to acquire some less derivative songs if they are to make an impact outside of their Facebook friends.
