I don’t often venture into the world of jazz even though I probably should. Saffron Byass does venture into the world of jazz, and adult oriented rock for that matter, with her album “Speak Your Truth” but does so more in search for inspiration than to conform to the stylistic norms of that genre.

Her album is therefore less of an adventure in technical prowess than an exploration of good time mellowness distinguished by a mature outlook on life.  “The Riverbed Blues” stands a fine example of this. As a song it has the mark of sophistication upon it and Ms Byass handles it like a seasoned pro on a mission to lift herself out of the supper club circuit. In a similar vein, “Let It Go” seems draws more on New York than her native Hull and even includes a very decent – and very American - extended guitar solo.

So, all in all, Saffron Byass shows herself worthy of the attention of those who appreciate quality song writing and a histrionic free performance. “Speak Your Truth” is, in simple terms, a tasteful album.
