I’m pretty terrible at names but I remember the name of Tom Davis. Formerly leading up Rags & Feathers – critically acclaimed by everybody including, remarkably, Bluesbunny – and guitarist with the much lamented Dead Fly Buchowski, Rainbow Fisher represents his latest four piece musical incarnation.
Much as you expect given his pedigree, Tom Davis is not out to deafen or shock you. Starting off with “By The Sea”, the feeling is positively pastoral with underlying influences of Americana on the cusp of Gram Parsons. “Benone”, whilst a touch livelier, also draws little from this cold and wet part of the world in terms of its sonic references but there is no mistaking the deadbeat Scottish sense of humour in those spirited lyrics.
“Wind In Sail” is much more fragile and moves the band into a folky, near psychedelic groove that suits them well. Subtlety, as you might have gathered, is the name of the game here and you have to let this one drift over you and carry you off towards the summer of love. As “Horizon” takes us out of this EP, you are left waving the warmth goodbye and wishing that it would soon return.
Although the EP goes nowhere fast – and I don’t suppose for a moment that it was intended to – it nonetheless exudes a west coast (of the USA) style warmth and that makes this an EP that you can play and play. Nicely done, as they say.
The EP is available from Bandcamp.
