Another EP for aficionados of seventies blues rock from The Gypsy Bangles. It’s even called “Peace, Love, Rock ‘n’ Roll” so that you know where they are coming from. Of course, being a band so determinedly revivalist as this band are can be no bad thing if it is done right and it has, fortunately, been done right this time.
Front man Kegan DeBoheme stamps his authority on all the songs just like an old style rock star should and that thick enough to eat sound rounds off that feeling of a band that knows and loves the tour bus. A respectful cover of Free’s “Fire and Water” notwithstanding, these are all original songs with “Heroin” and “Frustrated” standing out as the most accomplished and authentic.
I reckon bands like this make music more for the love of the time period than for any potential commercial return. The Gypsy Bangles have a degree of musical skill that exceeds what you would expect of a modern day band and that seventies rock sound is still popular with many so maybe this EP will be the one that brings them success.
