Edinburgh indie popsters Cancel The Astronauts strike backwards with the new single “Intervention”. They’ve gone all cheesy – and I mean pure Primula – this time round with this synth driven song that celebrates the time when a check shirt and incomplete facial hair was all you needed to make you the centre of attention in your very own summer of love. Spread this one on a slice of wholemeal bread and you will have a truly healthy toe tapping snack.

Of course you do get another couple of songs as well. The bouncy “Echoes Of Love” works that electro rock inspired love lost and found again theme so beloved of smart Scottish indie bands. Throw in a guitar riff and this is as neat a celebration of that post Postcard sound as you will get. However, if old age has got to you and you are looking for a song with more meat on its bones then look no further than “The Hardest Thing”. A much subtler song distinguished by the clever (un)sentimentality of the lyrics, it is altogether darker in tone and less of a song to please your ears and more of a song to touch your heart. Cancel The Astronauts are a band who can engage both your feet and your heart and that is plenty good enough for me.

Available from Bandcamp.
