It is an oft told story. A story of a young singer songwriter and her debut album and this time the story involves Alejandra O’Leary and her album “Broken Mirror Baby”. After all things are considered, this story might even point the way to a happy ending of sorts.
Ms O’Leary knows her way around a lyric and many of the songs on this album neatly capture relationships on the cusp of self destruction with the reflective nature of her words being best illustrated in ”Connect With Me” that elegantly counterpoints her controlled vocals with the song’s lyrical intent. “Horses” seems likewise to spring from the same source of inspiration but this time mixes a fifties style cute vocal with electro rock for its sonic signature. The more up-tempo songs such as “Broken Mirror Baby” do tend to highlight some limitations in her range thus losing the necessary authority to convince with that type of song.
Although this album misses the mark a few times, it nonetheless impresses for the earnest enthusiasm that Ms O’Leary brings to the party. Maybe next time it will be time for love and marriage?
Available from CD Baby and the usual places.
