Melody has many uses. So does that thing known as a chord progression. Many uses indeed in the wild and crazy world of music but it seems that most bands know little of these things. Murnie, however, know much of these things and put that knowledge to good use with the release of their EP “Sundaymouth”.
It is also gratifying to note that the missing link is also present and correct for, lyrically, Murnie show themselves to be rather more than a step ahead of their contemporaries with both “Whitehouse” and “Shaking A Fist At God” giving as much pleasure to the mind as they do to those toe tapping feet that you didn't know you had. It’s more than enough reason to make you wonder if Murnie had received divine inspiration from someone like Ray Davies.
The hallmarks of a musical education are there too with that easy going feel that comes only with practice and a sound theoretical knowledge. “Smile” simmers like a real adult pop song should with that Fender Rhodes keyboard sound sounding less retro than downright cheeky. Similarly mature in its outlook, “Soft Brown Voice” exceeds what you expect of the time honoured first kiss is the last kiss inspiration.
Murnie make their mark here with songs of maturity and memorability and one can only hope that there is more to follow.
