The press release says that The Rag N Bone Man hails from the bowels of Scotland. That might well be true but shit he is certainly not. With but four tracks of fury on this humble little CD, the evidence of a twisted out of shape angry man is clear to hear
.
“Savage” takes the lo-fi route to a blues powered street fight with distorted vocals howling out of the past paralleled by an angry harmonica. Couldn’t work out what the words were about but I doubt the The Rag N Bone Man wants to work in a flower shop. Sinking the boot in social commentary style, “Junkie In The Phone Box” then walks the streets of every broken dream in this dirty old town. The blues was always a good way of celebrating suffering and there is plenty to be had in this song.
“Working Class Warfare” sounds more like sonic terrorism than political statement but thundering repetition is as good way as any of making your point whilst “Sunnycidal” starts out on the sensitive trail before grunging up the twelve bars once more, only this time there is more than a hint of the conventional rock star both in The Rag N Bone Man’s voice and his words.
If honesty is your thing, and it should be, you should worship The Rag N Bone Man as he is the antidote to sensitive singer songwriters, Saturday night television, twee pop and hip hop. Bring on the revolution!
The EP is available from Bandcamp.
