No, not that Chuck Jackson for this album is r&b rather than soul and this Chuck Jackson is actually Canadian and formerly vocalist of the well regarded Downchild Blues Band. Having assembled the necessary musicians for a big band, the Canadian Chuck Jackson has put them to good use with this album of reverential covers of Big Joe Turner songs.

Reinterpretation of these songs was never going to be the game here and there are consequently few surprises to be had.  As you would also expect, the musicianship is of a high standard throughout with Jesse O’Brien’s spirited piano on “Don’t You Make Me High” and “Boogie Woogie Country Girl” being especially worthy of comment. As for Chuck Jackson himself, you can feel the love he has for these songs in every note that he sings.

I can see “A Cup Of Joe” going down well with a lot of people.
