Taking something of a break from their normal country rock roots – or should that be route – Galipaygos instead fall under the spell of producer Andrew Taylor – of Edinburgh popsters Dropkick – and consequently get turned into a clone of Dropkick in less than two shakes of a lamb’s tail.

The wry lyrics that we have come to expect of Galipaygos easily survive the musical transformation and, in the few songs that remain true to the ways of Galipaygos past, such as the sublimely melancholic “Are” or the offbeat “Ode to Miss Marple”, the light of past glories still shines brightly. Not that there is anything wrong with being a Dropkick clone, of course, but, let’s face it, no one ever died of excitement after hearing a Dropkick album.

That said, “Plain Sailing” is an album that is always easy on the ear if, for the most part, unadventurous. I would however imagine that legions of Dropkick fans out there might well take a liking to it.
