Reanimation is a solo project for Michael Shanahan and, with “Under The Last Tree On Earth”, he seems determined to set sail for greater things. Deeper things too as this is a far from flippant album and the extended nature of all the songs allowing the full force of his convictions to shine through.
Although much of the album is contemplative in nature, and thus perhaps best enjoyed in headphones late at night, there is no lack of spirit with “Surprise Hitchhiker”, especially, benefiting from an injection of musical steroids and thus fighting its way to the top of the pile.
The DIY approach does have its drawbacks however and, in the case of “Under The Last Tree on Earth”, it is the vocals. Mr Shanahan just doesn’t have a voice strong enough to triumph over the layered soundscapes that are the foundation of all the songs on this album. That said, “Under The Last Tree on Earth” is still an intelligent album and should find favour with those who like complexity in their music.
