It’s sometimes hard to figure out the appeal of the Americana genre with most of the bands slavishly following the rules as if they had been written by the hand of God. Interestingly, many of the best practitioners of this safe genre turn out to be from countries other than the good old US of A and Germany’s “The Golden Creek” are an example of that.
The pace of these seven songs is, as you might expect, steady and their direction is likewise clear from start to finish. Matthias Abel steers the ship with a light touch while his languorous voice provides much of the sonic appeal here. He picks up “I Think I Am the Pilot” and carries it carefully forward and shows similar care when delivering “She Cares for You” to all the sentimental ears out there.
Americana they are but The Golden Creek have struck the right balance between tradition and today with this album. No doubt they will make many new friends at roots festivals throughout Europe.
