Sykoya’s “Strange Night” EP has only four songs but it seems longer. I don’t mean that in a bad way just that the songs seem to merge into one another and, if you loop the tracks around, the last merges seamlessly into the first as if part of the same spell.

That is, perhaps, a consequence of the near robotic precision with which these synth led songs have been assembled or, more likely, due to the hypnotic effect that Anna Marcella’s voice has on you once the clock strikes midnight and the rolling synth lines take the songs out on to the road leading to some mythical place where the shadows sing in chorus with her voice.

“Closer” is the standout song here evoking, as it does, a vision of empty avenues and alleyways travelled in search of absolution from obsession. “The Wolf” isn’t far behind in the emotional stakes with Ms. Marcella striking forth like some sort of witch casting forth an electro spell on the urban landscape.

It’s 4am and I’m listening to this EP whilst parked up in an Asda car park. If she’ll let me, I’d like to go home.
