It would, after listening to Woochia’s “Travel” EP, be easy to dismiss it as just another example of a DJ with pretensions of being a serious musician. However, there is considerably more depth here than dancefloor repetition and these six songs, whilst paced with robotic precision, gain an undeniable hypnotic effect that cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence.
The key thing to remember here that all is not quite what it seems with something organic flowing through the perfectly sequenced beats to thus allow a curious emotional coupling between man and machine. “Soil”, for example, could easily be chopped up into a feet friendly post-midnight floor filler yet it is abundantly clear that Woochia – aka Charly Sauret – has grander ideas than that and, with commendable focus, instead spins the song into an intoxicating blend of old style sampling and Sakamoto style mood enhancement that becomes almost spiritual in scope.
If you were to play this in your, undoubtedly upmarket, car whilst driving at night through the city streets you might well be drawn to wonder if you had found the perfect soundtrack for your journey through the neon jungle with Woochia proving himself the perfect pied piper to lead you from complexity to simplicity.
