There are things in life that cause you to ponder whether there is actually anything worthwhile at the end of the rainbow. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for you, but that pot of gold is subject to UK taxes and, if you think Anna Secret Poet doesn’t know that, then it is a “No Brainer” that you should listen to this album. Oh dear. Another day and another contrived segue.
On to the music that provides the soundtrack in the manic world of Anna Secret Poet. Yes, it’s not quite reality but there is enough of what we recognise in there to engage the curious especially if they like low budget, but always literate, punk pop. That means the oft forgotten ingredients of hooks and melodies are present in reasonable quantity and, with more than a dash of taking it to the bridge guitar and offbeat humour, you can sing along whilst wondering what “Where Does The Other Sock Go?” and “Poke The Bear” are really about. No matter, anyone who can write an irony free song like “Goth Girls” without overdosing on cultural references must be on something special.
When all is said and done, “No Brainer” is the kind of album that they just don’t make anymore and, whilst at times taking artistic bravado to Tim Curry levels, Anna Secret Poet never actually forgets that it’s all about the song and that is something to be applauded.
Best song? The brashly commercial “No Brainer”.
The verdict? Punk pop hits the street again.
