In these times in which we have the misfortune to live, there isn’t much left to raise the spirits. Yet, if you look long and hard enough, you will, find something to do just that. In my case, it was this EP called “Smile While I Sing The Blues” by 3Times7.

Now, can a mere five songs really make your life better? Of course, they can for 3Times7 have kept it simple and, with a flexible take on 12 bar blues worship, they hold their course to better times with a dedication that deserves respect. Jenny Lawrence, out front, has a voice that exudes credibility and, with five songs to prove her point, she transcends all artificiality to pull you closer to where you really want to be. Which – no surprise here - is next to her.

Being cynical, I had expected 3Times7 to be the kind of band that would perhaps pander to the box ticking festival audience. Yet, after repeated exposure to “Smile While I Sing The Blues”, I could hear the combined heartbeats of believers in the healing power of music.

The world may well have gone to shit but the truth, thankfully, is still out there in the music.

Best song? The playful “Ode to New Orleans”.

The verdict? Uplifting.
