What’s a man to say about an album like this? I could say that this is the work of an accomplished songwriter who can successfully mix folk influences with the always sensitive ways of the singer songwriter on repeat. Jon Budworth hits that target on his album “In Sight of Home”.
The songs are for the most part reflective and would easily fit into the playlist of any self-respecting wine bar or guest slot in a folk club but there are also songs on this album that seems more upbeat and, if truth be told, sound as if you have heard them before even if you can’t exactly remember where. “I Don’t Need Tomorrow”, for example, reminded me of a song that Elton John might have written back in the days when he was good while, conversely, those more delicate songs such as “Ghost Of A Girl” or “Never” sounded like they were designed to work well in the voice of another.
This isn’t an album to frighten your maiden aunt, nor was it ever designed to be, and it would not be too much of a stretch to imagine that your enjoyment of this album would be enhanced by a glass of sweet sherry.
Mellow is as mellow does and Jon Budworth does the mellow thing well.
