There are times when you need a gourmet meal and there are times when you can quite happily go with a burger and fries. Or chicken pakora for that matter. Or, indeed, anything that will satisfy you in the here and now. So, with that food analogy still in my recently dispossessed mind, what of Glasgow’s Bad Year and their album “Moancore”?

It is obvious that the Bad Year recipe includes copious quantities of nineties pop punk influences with their secret sauce being the almost manic amount of energy that this band throw into the mix. Their enthusiasm for the task in hand lifts them above being on this planet merely to make some noise and, even if their lyrics often seem more motivated by angst rather than anger, the combination of omnipresent guitars and singalong hooks will, convince all and sundry that Bad Year should be primarily associated with double cheeseburgers and fun.

Throwing some soundbites around the songs adds a neat touch to the production of this album yet, in all probability, Bad Year will be a band that needs to be experienced in the live environment for maximum enjoyment. You might even find me in the front row with a burger in my hand.

Available from Bandcamp and the usual digital places.
