I get a lot of different kinds of music dropping through the virtual mailbox yet, and this may just be a sign of the times, there isn’t really that much that anybody would class as good time music. Music that you can just enjoy of a Friday night. Music that makes the world seem a better place. Music like the self-titled EP from Seattle based band Sugar Bones.
Whilst it is indeed true that Sugar Bones draw from the river of retro for their influences, it is also true that Sugar Bones also have added a little bit of their own musical magic to make the five songs on this EP uplifting. You will, for example, find the basic elements of funk eloquently executed but this is mixed with bursts of powerhouse guitars to ensure that the listener can’t put their ears on hold, and, topping it all off, is the voice of Corrin Cruz who has the delivery of a full on rock singer but can also squeeze as much emotion out of a lyric as a soul singer would.
Confidently and convincingly performed, the “Sugar Bones” EP is the product of a band who would make any Friday night better. That works for me.
