Is it all about the ambience? Or is this how style in portrayed in the musical world of today? Questions, questions, questions brought on by listening to “Dancing The Same Dance” by Misha Chylkova.
Undoubtedly, Misha Chylkova has style. Her voice is almost always wistful verging on laconic and the brooding, looped into perpetual melancholy, synthesisers holding her musical hand to make her seem like a purveyor of chanson without the cigarettes or, perhaps, a member of the sisterhood of the perennially but poetically downbeat. “Dancing The Same Dance” isn’t therefore an album that will get your toes tapping but it will, in all likelihood, put you in the mood for the kind of intellectual contemplation that a David Lynch movie would normally induce and, even when the tempo moves up a gear, you will still feel like all that you hear is actually inside your head.
“Dancing The Same Dance” will have an undeniably hypnotic appeal for both urban hipsters looking for something with more substance than their last favourite band and those who seek emotional resonance in their choice of music. When all is said and done, it’s a style thing and you know you like it that way.
Best song: “Sparrows”.
Verdict: Style inside your head.
