It’s a European thing. Post rock, that is, as there is a seemingly never ending stream of bands from the continent of plenty willing to add their intellect to songs that extend as far they did in the glorious heyday of the rock pantheon. Italian band Last Eon duly extemporise their musical vision and deliver it over the course of their album “Wooden Bodies”.

Call it any way you will but in those times when your mind might want to wander, some post rock music makes a great companion. Last Eon - Sergio Todisco, Fabiano Pittiglio, Emanuele Tartaglia, Alessandro Prete and Riccardo Bianchi – have songs that roll forever forwards thus providing a soundtrack while you ponder whatever your mind wants to ponder and these five songs have duly been given room to breathe without the artificial limits imposed by either the three minute pop song construct or old school radio friendliness.

To the untrained or unwary ear, these songs may therefore appear to lack focus but it is this band’s style, or more accurately stylistic intent, to allow the time it takes to get anywhere to be determined by nothing more than the components of the song and, even with the somewhat awkwardly sung English lyrics, everything seems to work towards their desired result.

To that end, this album, if not actually meditative, does evoke emotion in a measured yet entirely considered manner and that, I would suppose, was the band’s intention. Post rock, after all, always has a purpose.
