You can’t go far wrong in life if you love guitars and, duly, Glasgow band Ferri & The Fevers don’t go far wrong with their self-titled debut album as it has a positive plethora of guitars.
Whilst bands from Glasgow that are big on guitars are hardly a rarity as a result of that indie rock will never die heritage, Ferri & The Fevers - Lisa Ferri, Martin Kelly and Craig Meighan – have more than guitars working in their favour. For one thing, there are lyrics that have more substance and range than most. The usual pop culture influences are in there and Ferri & The Fevers, to give credit where it is due, get a fair bit of mileage of those yet, with the words taken care of, the music gets to take a few detours into genres where the guitar is not usually the king. However, there is little doubt that the words are the real meat on this band’s bones with “Deal With God” and “Hold On To Your Lover”, in particular, providing the evidence that literacy, sentiment and angst can successfully co-exist.
As debut albums go, Ferri & The Fevers is a solid, guitar fuelled, effort with enough substance to keep your mind working whilst your foot is tapping.
