Another year starts so I got to wondering what sounds would be first out of the trap in the race for my musical affections is 2025. How about “Lizard Goes Home” by Reine De Lézard? There might well be only three songs on this EP and, to tell the truth, I have no real idea who Reine De Lézards are but three songs might just be enough to make the ink flow.
Even the press release has little more than the cover art and some download links so I am fairly sure that Reine De Lézards are one of those bands that either relishes obscurity or are only known to the cognoscenti of the underground scene. Nevertheless, music is, as always, where it is at even if you aren’t really sure if the at is close to an Asda superstore. Unsurprisingly, the loops are strong in these three songs with analogue synth sounds getting crushed together with heavily processed vocals – from the Lizard Queen perhaps? – to make the result something of an exercise in electro inspired urban brutality like getting stuck on a runaway tram with only homicidal Taito video game consoles for company on your journey to your final destination. You could possibly dance to these songs even if you weren’t in a mascara fuelled frenzy but you probably couldn’t if you were eating vegetable pakora.
That said, any band who makes me hungry must be doing something right and “Lizard Goes Home” must therefore be a good start to 2025.
This EP is available from Bandcamp and, no doubt, other digital places.
