Songs themed on the sea. That’s just what a city dweller needs on a moderately wet Thursday afternoon in Glasgow. Onwards and outwards, therefore, to “Stormbird” by Greenshanks.
“Stormbird” indeed features five songs with a connection to the sea. This is a conventional approach for a singer songwriter based somewhere up in the even wetter parts of Scotland where matters natural, nautical, and historical are all around to provide the necessary lyrical inspiration. This inspiration is, of course, not the reality of tourist, oatcakes and potentially fictional CalMac ferries but instead the misty memories of the highland clearances and metaphorical birds and Greenshanks – aka Will Boyd-Wallis – duly treats everything that tunes his guitar with both sincerity and seriousness. It is his way and those who remember the past as the present will undoubtedly raise a glass of chilled Chardonnay to him in appreciation.
Traditionally presented and conventional in content, “Stormbird” demonstrates that Greenshanks is perfectly capable of giving the people what they want.
