There are times when only jazz will satisfy your ears. What am I saying? There are no such times and what your ears really need is some guitar heavy rock meets garage songs that will most admirably accompany excessive beer consumption. Something, perhaps, like “Doll” by Lilith’s Army.

As bands go, Liliths Army are unafraid of wearing their musical influences on their sleeves. The riffs are rock heavy and all that they do is superglued to the sole purpose of making a room, or your head, shake. Sylvia Studente, for it is she, veers between the laconic and the aggressive whilst throwing in blink and you miss them moments of gravel burning vocals redolent of a metal band. Throw in some not so subtle riff stealing from grunge hits of the past and you have an album that sounds at once familiar but, nonetheless, not unlike trouble.

Of course, none of this means anything if a band has no style. Liliths Army, fortunately do have style and, with all the grit and cheap cider consumption you might expect of a more primitive band, they have little trouble in providing you with a reason to engage your brain and listen to the next song. “Doll” is a play loud album and none the worse for it.
