Newcastle has quite a few breweries. At least I have a recollection to that fact as far as I can recall after a particularly fearsome weekend in that part of the world. That part of the world also has a singer songwriter or three and one of said purveyors of songs best played on heartstrings is Ruth Lyon.

Her album “Poems & Non-Fiction” is duly comprised of eleven songs that make emotion seem like a good thing. There is, of course, sadness and introspection to be found in her words yet, due to the literate presentation of her lyrics and her unaffected vocal delivery, all that you might hear seems real as if reflecting a world where people and their feelings mean more than the clothes that they might wear. The musicianship, though intermittently minimalist, is possessed of an eloquence that supports the perceived, or perhaps proposed, emotional resonance with “Seasons”, in particular, exhibiting something akin to a hypnotic effect on my attention.

Some might say that the world needs more singer songwriters. I am driven to agree with that and Ruth Lyon has used the songs in “Poems & Non-Fiction” to make a coherent and cogent case in favour of that assertion.
