Interesting. A double CD. You don’t see many doublers these days unless you are seeking a composite soundtrack for a girls night out where the girls aren’t quite the girls they used to be. Whilst it is unlikely that “Two Boats Under The Moon” by Donald WG Lindsay would ever be played inside a stretched limousine, it is still two discs worth of entirely traditional Scottish music.
Being so very traditional, there are, in consequence, no surprises. The first disc is mainly self-penned and the second is comprised of covers of the kind of songs that fans of traditional music will surely recognise. The musicianship of all concerned varies little with regard to both quality and interpretive skills and, powered by sentimentality as such songs should be, these fourteen songs should suit contemplation whether whisky fuelled or not.
I can’t say that this kind of music is my cup of tea. Maybe it is the lack of the Gaelic or the missing manic charm found in the music of the ceilidh or it might simply be that I need to be a bit nearer to meeting the grim reaper to appreciate Donald WG Lindsay‘s style but it is difficult, nonetheless, to deny just how earnest and serious his take on tradition is. I think some people will find that interesting.
