So, what’s happening in the world of music in Hungary these days? Let’s take a listen to the EP “Growing Gash” by Budapest band Choke City and find out.
There are but three songs on this EP and they certainly do not lack in intensity. Everything is full on from the impassioned vocals to the mix dominating guitars. Now, I like my guitars and these guitars – played with vigour by Barnabás Kiss – do indeed cascade with a near merciless sense of post punk purpose while the voice of Richárd Géczi swirls within this sonic maelstrom as if the lyrics – in English – were but bullets in this loaded gun of sonic devastation. There is, of course, art in all of this yet, despite the lyrical pretension, this is still a band that can make any tunnel shake in sympathy to their sturdy rhythms.
Choke City sound like the kind of band that know what the inside of a basement looks like. Their sound is not one of subtlety but is one of the big city streets at night. The big city streets late at night with the volume turned right up. Those Budapest streets.
