It says here that Jack Phemister is an Australian who has relocated to Prague. No idea why anyone would want to do that but, if it gets those creative juices flowing, this could be a one for my baby and one for the road kind of thing. His new EP is called “Sleeping Dogs, by the way.
There are but three songs and one of those is a cover of a Fiona Apple song so it is clear that Jack Phemister knows his songwriters and he successfully merges this song into his own as if it was always meant to be. His own two songs have an art rock vibe to them with “June” grooving solidly like an anthem for the uptown squad on a cocktail bar rampage. “Undertow”, on the other hand, sounds almost wholesome with the combination of seventies blues rock moves and pragmatic lyrics just crying out for an intimate meeting with a twelve inch slab of vinyl in a textured sleeve.
Whilst Jack Phemister often shows an almost cavalier disregard for clarity, there is no doubt that he can stamp his own particular style upon a song and that’s a good thing.
