Just when you think that you will live forever in the heaven of Girls Aloud albums on infinite repeat, you find yourself suddenly transported into the alternate universe of eclectic lo-fi musicians like Impossible Mule with your ears duly attuned to his album “Merry Prankster”.
Like all pranksters, Impossible Mule isn’t really merry and these sixteen songs are distinctly downbeat – just like those scratchy old blues 78s hidden in the deep and dark recesses of my collection – speaking of a near reality where better days might exist but probably don’t. Throw in some curious poetic interludes to break up those dark clouds, if only to add a dash of red to the enveloping greyness, and it is clear that Impossible Mule is not pursuing the adoration of the mass market. After all, some people just make music because they can and it therefore matters not whether one or a million listen to it.
Whilst the approach on “Merry Prankster” appears to have been quantity rather than quality, Impossible Mule continues his quest to attain his desired position in the pantheon of eccentric British musicians.
