As a convicted worshipper of the three minute pop song, it takes some effort to attune my ears to a ten minute musical meditation like “Dew Point” by Spirit Radio. Fortunately, effort is my middle name.
I don’t really feel that this piece of music could be categorised as being of the ambient genre as, despite the loops and synthetic soundscapes, Spirit Radio - Stephen Spera and Tamalyn Miller - are, once again, all circles and no squares in their presentation. Nothing much really happens as was no doubt intended, but, and I may be wrong here, the whole point of this musical enchantment was to leave enough space for thought and inner contemplation with the late appearance of ghostly voices serving to reinforce that all that you hear is not of the earth but of the ether.
In addition to “Dew Point” itself there are also eight short variations on “A Sighting” which spin a similar tale of spiritual sequencing but imagined as if completion could only be regarded as an optional extra to the Spirit Radio story. That, curiously, seems entirely appropriate.
As in all things musical, the meaning is whatever you want it to be. Tune in and ponder that for a minute or ten.
