I can’t say that I have ever been to a folk club. I’m not really sure why but it might be somehow related to my illogical fear of men with serious beards. Men like Ian Bruce & Kev Green perhaps? Onwards and sideways, nonetheless, into their new album “Believe Me, I’m Lying”.

Folk music isn’t the kind of music that needs to hide behind technology and, to their credit, neither Ian Bruce nor Kev Green attempt to disguise their talent with excessive use of digital trickery. Their voices, and indeed all their vocal affectations, are unforced and provide a good artistic match to the story songs that they duly deliver. There is sentiment, as you would most reasonably expect, in their songs with history providing the additional course corrections to steer their musical ship right alongside the expectations of their intended audience.

No one would expect surprises in an album like this and none are indeed sprung upon us so I would imagine that music of Ian Bruce & Kev Green would be just what the doctor ordered if you happen to find yourself in a folk club. And, yes, they both have serious beards.

The album is available from Bandcamp and the other usual digital places.
