When I think of Belgium, I think of two things and those two things are beer and chocolate. However, there are other good things that come from Belgium and perhaps one of those things would be female fronted dark gothic synth metal bands like Lovelorn Dolls. Onwards therefore into the darkness Lovelorn Dolls go with their new EP “True Crimes”.

The metal influences are much in evidence in these four songs with those brooding synthesisers sharing the sound stage with muscular guitars and heavyweight percussion as part of the Lovelorn Doll’s plan to keep your ears listening on the dark side of the street. It is also fair to say that, given the subject matter inspiring the lyrics, none of these songs would make a good accompaniment to a Sunday afternoon ice cream and, despite the almost girlish appeal of Kristell Lowagie’s voice, this EP is most definitely a soundtrack to the shadows.

So, with much in the way of bleak melancholy on show, Lovelorn Dolls do a decent job of proving the black can be still the chosen colour of the clothing choice for bands with something to say.
