Here we go again or do we? Catty does something unusual with “Bracing For Impact” and splits her six songs into the so conventional that they could be parodies and some gloriously theatrical art pop that would cause even these tired ears to press the repeat button.
Now, I like a bit of volume with my fix of music. Always have and always will so subtlety and saccharine sentimentality will never be prerequisites to my musical enjoyment. Duly, Catty hits the ground running with “Joyride” and “Prized Possession” sounding like they should be on the soundtrack of an arts council funded musical on overdrive. Don’t get me wrong. The many and myriad of the mainstream chase that upfront and streetwise attitude that Catty exudes but, as is so often the case, too much polish dilutes the message that the mainstream markets to the masses. Catty, on the other hand, is closer to the edge with her words, whether on matters of heart or not, being the greasepaint on the smiling face of a troubled today.
I don’t know if Catty counts as a true voice of today but, at the very least, she is worth listening to and I also would hope that her time in the spotlight will soon be close to hand.
