In the mystical world that we live in, there is much in the way of music to be found and some of it bears only a passing resemblance to the mainstream. Of such things, onwards into the sonic forest we go with Felix Machtelinckx.
Albums like this don’t, perhaps fortunately, follow a pattern. I can’t say that I am familiar with music of Felix Machtelinckx but I suspect that my ignorance of his previous musical adventures will not prove much of a hindrance. Certainly, it did take me a couple of spins to find my footing with the ten songs on this album and there is indeed a hefty amount of things synthetic to be found yet the machine is not the master of all that you hear. This isn’t even something akin to a soundtrack album for, although there are times when you would be led to think that the picture is indeed missing, there are also times when that combination of robotic percussive precision, looped synthesisers and fragmented voices becomes an almost hypnotic and entirely synergistic combination.
“Deep South” is therefore not an album for the mainstream yet Felix Machtelinckx has not made an album that is inaccessible to even unadventurous ears. Perseverance may indeed be required if your listening tastes have not previously extended farther than Sabrina Carpenter but there is sustenance to be found for your ears, and maybe even your soul, in what you will hear.
The album is available from Bandcamp on vinyl or in digital format from the usual sources.
