Once more into the mystical lands of lo-fi music I venture with the holy grail, or at least the target of this review, this time being “The Reality Could Not Be Further From The Truth” by Impossible Mule.

I’ll give credit where credit is due. Impossible Mule isn’t one to stick to the same recipe for all the music that he creates. Previous releases had strayed well into trippier territories in stylistic terms and, while there is certainly enough in the way of cosmic rambling to be found in “The Reality Could Not Be Further From The Truth“, there is also a notably harder edge – some might even say focus – to his music this time around. You won’t be, of course, expecting the kind of anodyne perfection that makes chart music so forgettable and Impossible Mule duly loops mercilessly through the urban and even rock drum patterns in search of the most suitable means to transmit his not quite conventional message. Again, one might even call this approach spiritual yet it may, in fact, be a wise stylistic choice as there is a lot that is familiar to be found in those beats with his heavily processed vocal technique adding the individuality that might be expected of someone on the fringes of forever. There are lots of things here that seem to be going in the wrong direction on this album yet, remarkably, it still gets where it wants to go.

Those who search for something that might be truly classed as individual might well find “The Reality Could Not Be Further From The Truth” to be just what the man in the house at the end of the street who claims to be a doctor ordered. For my part, I’m, like, flying to moon on this one.

Available from Bandcamp and the usual digital places.
